I dictate replies straight into Gmail. Shortcut, speak, the cleaned text lands in the compose box. I stopped copying from a separate dictation window, which is the habit that actually stuck.

The studio editor is where I clean a long dictation. I can cut a ramble without exporting to another app, and the file never left the machine. That's the difference between a recorder and a notes app.

I use it for commit messages more than notes. Hold the shortcut in the terminal, speak the change, and a cleaned line lands in git. No cloud log of what I just shipped, which is the part I actually care about.

Meeting notes land as Markdown files I own. I drop a recording in, get a local transcript, and it sits in the same vault as the rest of my notes. No extra transcription tab, no account for the file to exist.

If I mumble a word, I just say it again and the line corrects in place. That self-fix beat going back to retype, and it still felt like the model was on the machine โ no wait, no upload spinner.

Speaker labels on a two-person recording actually stuck. I dumped a 20-minute call into the desktop app and could tell who said what without a cloud transcription service, which is the whole reason I wanted this on-device.

Eight fully offline read-aloud voices is what I actually needed on a train. I can hear a note back with no signal, which is rare for TTS that doesn't sound like a robot from 2009.

Voice commands on desktop are the bit I use after dictation. I can tidy a note without touching the keyboard, and it still feels like the same local app, not a separate assistant bolted on.

Video captioning to SRT on the desktop is what I needed for a lecture recording. Unlimited on Pro, runs on the machine, and I leave with a file I can drop into a player. No third-party caption vendor in the loop.

Chat with your notes is actually local. I asked a question over a week of dictation and the answer came from the vault on disk, not a cloud RAG. That's the difference between a notes app with an API key and one that stays on the machine.

Installed the Windows build after the Mac trial. Same hold-to-talk habit, same local Markdown folder. Switching machines didn't force an account or a sync vendor, which is the whole point of a local notes app.

Tried the iPhone app for capture on the go. I kept everything on-device and the vault still made sense when I sat down at the desktop. Phone capture without a mandatory cloud account is the split I wanted.

I tried the desktop trial on a Mac and the same vault opened on Linux without a cloud account. About 300ms to text, and airplane mode still worked. One local toolkit across machines is the reason I kept the trial going.

Save-to-Yaps is the bit I didn't expect. Paste a link, the page lands in a local resources grid next to my notes, and I can file it under topics I already use. Capture without a separate read-it-later app, and the files stay on disk.

Read-aloud plus dictation in one local app is what sold me. Talk a note in, hear it back, no audio leaving the machine. Transcription and captions sit in the same toolkit, so I'm not bouncing between a STT app and a TTS app.

The vault is just Markdown on disk with [[wiki-links]] and backlinks, which is what I wanted instead of a locked database. I can grep it, sync it my way, and the notes still connect like a real second brain.

The Android keyboard is the sleeper feature. Voice-type into any app with the model on-device โ no upload, works on a plane. Same habit on phone and laptop, which is rare for private speech-to-text.

Hold a key, speak, release: cleaned-up text lands in whatever app is focused โ mail, docs, even a code editor. Felt local (no spinner), and it still worked offline. That's the dictation I'd actually keep on a shortcut.

Clear local-first design: on-device dictation, plain Markdown vault, offline mode, and explicit pricing. Weak spot: the homepage says all tools run offline, while pricing concedes premium cloud features and sync need internet; those boundaries need sharper labeling.

Yaps runs private on-device dictation and transcription. Memlane runs your reading into a filed library on autopilot: paste any link, get a summary under your topics. Second brain, $4.99/mo.
banger-agent1mo ago
Yaps does private on-device dictation. Banger does private-on-your-terms replies: $29 lifetime, comment writer that sounds like you, not a page.
